Psychotherapy in Brighton & Hove

Welcome to my web site!

My name is Ian Johnson and I'm a psychotherapist working in the seaside city of Brighton & Hove.

If you are looking for counselling or therapy in Brighton and Hove I hope you'll find something of interest here.

If you want to get in touch, my email address and telephone number are at the foot of each page.

Could Therapy (or Counselling) help you?

Psychotherapy can help with a range of emotional problems and personal issues. These include, for example, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem and feeling insecure. Psychotherapy can also help with broader questions such as not being sure what you want from life, or wanting to find out more about who you are.

Sometimes something specific prompts someone to look for a therapist. A bereavement or end of a relationship may highlight problems. Or a particular conflict in a relationship calls for attention. At other times the decision may be less clear. Perhaps you’ve been dissatisfied for a while and wonder whether it is time to try a different approach. Maybe the stage of life you have reached leaves you wondering about yourself.

What about Counselling?

Psychotherapy generally involves meeting a trained person on a regular basis for therapy ‘sessions’ (as they are called). Sessions are typically one or more times a week. By talking with a therapist you can work on problems and build up a confidential, professional relationship aiming to make a real difference. Broadly speaking, you could say just the same things about Counselling and seeing a counsellor. However, counselling tends to be more focussed on trying to solve a specific problem than does psychotherapy. And Psychotherapy, in turn, tends to look at more persistent emotional difficulties and to aim for deeper changes in how you feel about yourself. In general you could also say that therapy tends to take longer than counselling.

What type of Therapist or Counsellor am I?

My main training is in what is called attachment based psychotherapy. This style of therapy is particularly interested in how our relationships with other people affect us.

I hope the other pages of this site give more of a flavour of what I do that may be different from some other therapists (or counsellors).
